Q&A about the GREEN Program
(Revised August 1, 2001)

What refrigerants will be tested?
The baseline refrigerants will vary by application, but are expected to be 134a, 410A, 507 and 407C. The alternative refrigerants will likely include propane and other hydrocarbons, and carbon dioxide.

What systems will be tested?
A variety of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems will be tested, based upon the interests of the participants. 'Equivalent' baseline and alternative systems will be tested under identical conditions. The definition of 'equivalent' has yet to be defined. Systems will be tested in climate-controlled laboratories.

Will attention be paid to safety codes?
Systems will be designed and tested according to the governing safety standard in the participant's primary market area.

How will performance be measured?
To be determined

How will reports be cleared as "official results"?
One possible process might be:
  • Papers presented as drafts at open meetings
  • Discussion allowed and recorded at the meeting
  • Two-month review and comment process for everyone allowed after the meeting
  • One-month rewrite/response period for authors
  • Steering Committee receives draft Final Reports for approval to issue as official results. Executive Assistant to the GREEN program will alert the Steering Committee to any draft Final Reports that should be considered carefully.
  • Steering Committee releases Final Reports, or returns them to authors for modification before publication.
Who will bear the costs of the program?
Participants will each bear the cost of their own testing. This testing can be done in their own laboratories or in laboratories under contract to the participant. ARI members, through their dues, will pay for the administration of the GREEN effort. The hosting regional trade association will bear the cost of holding GREEN meetings in their country or region.
